There was a major earthquake strike (Magnitude 8.0 at Richter scale) on May 11, 2008, which has caused a major disaster in the remote northwest mountainous area of Sichuan Province. The Government of Sichuan Province is raising US$ 244.15 billion to re-construct this quake destroyed area -- rebuilding 4.5 million of civilian houses, 31.7 thousand miles of local roads, 3416 miles of local railroads, 11.7 thousand schools, 9.7 thousand hospitals, 2000 water reservoirs, 810 power plants, restoring 100 thousand acres of farm lands, reforesting 300 thousand acres of lands; the local government's re-construction plan needs huge amount of construction materials: 37 million tons of steel, 370 million tons of cement, 210 billion of standard wall building bricks, 37.7 billion cubic feet of construction sand, 706.3 million cubic feet of wood. The huge demand for construction materials, heavy machinery, architecture, Engineering and design, mining and quarrying has far exceeded Sichuan's ability to produce these materials in a timely manner; it is badly needed to introduce large scale foreign manufacturers into Sichuan to fulfill these needs as early as possible.
